Week 17: Noah Scented Mayo, Birthdays, a Guitar, and a John Smith Look-a-like
Well howdy howdy! Week 17 is in the books! Much better week this week than last thankfully. We had a few set backs with my companion feeling a little sick for a bit (not covid THANKFULLY (I would die)), but we had a lot of good lessons and contacts. It's almost like it's genuinely enjoyable when things don't fall through 🤪.
Anyways, so every Tuesday we have a mission wide zoom call in order to gather as a mission and discuss <the work> (<> means italics when you're writing an email on a phone...). This past Tuesday we had the opportunity to hear from Elder John Groberg. I thought that name sounded familiar when I heard it a couple of weeks ago when it was first announced. But I didn't realize until Tuesday (when they just casually started playing clips from The Other Side of Heaven) (oh wait, I need to add a <> to the title. I can't go back to jail) that it's the guy the movies are based off of. That was pretty cool I guess. He shared a lot from his missions, and the major take away that I got was to show up and try each day. He had a pretty good message accompanied with that. It was also enjoyable to somewhat have access to cinema in the like 5 minute clip we watched from the movie (via screen share with like 100 participants, sooooo.....).
Yeah, we also helped out at Audubon twice this week. We did the usual service on Friday, but we didn't get to feed the owls or hawk because they were cutting a massive tree down. (I say hawk because they literally put Reddy down a couple of weeks ago. Like actually what on earth. My video from a few weeks ago was the last time I fed him. They didn't even consult the missionaries who have fed him for a decade. It was so sad.) We also helped at some field, tagging monarch butterflies for an Audubon program they were doing. It was pretty cool to catch and tag one not going to lie. In case you didn't know, the way you tell it's a boy is if it has 2 spots on its wings (the scent glands). Hence the subject line's Noah scented mayo. I thought it was literally hilarious. A joke I've used many a time before the mission. A joke not used once on the mission. No one laughed.
Oh, and President Nelson turned 98 this week which was pretty fire. @hannah larson --- the pictures of him with his 98 balloons are so reminiscent of the pictures in his cute vest from when they worked on the Salt Lake Temple. Nothing like a 98 year old man who acts like he's 45.
Oh, I bought a guitar this week. I needed something to do so that I don't go stir crazy. Speaking of guitars, someone we taught yesterday just happens to have a couple of $3000 guitars, so he let us play some of them which was pretty cool. Honestly Amazon Basics, y'all are disappointing. Y'all can't let a 3k one compete. Like emBARassing.
Alright last thing on the subject line. We took a selfie with a John Smith look-a-like (which if you're not familiar with standard pop culture, is Joseph Smith. Just no one knows that out here. They too commonly call him the John Smith with 36 wives. Sooo funny when I hear it (like every day)).
But yeah, like I said, we had a lot of good lessons this week. Our friends are progressing, it's just been a challenge to try and get them to church. Alan (our most progressing friend) is still on date for baptism at the beginning of October, but has recently had a <run in> with some life challenges. See below, it's insane. Pray for him plz. Our other friends enjoy us coming by and talking about the gospel with them, but we're trying to help them understand the importance of coming to church. We'll see what happens over the next few weeks.
Anyways, I love y'all so much, and look forward to writing next week!
