Week 21: Double Double, Toil and Trouble (Pt. 4)
Hi.
Welcome back to Elder Creer's monologue I guess.
Well it's transfer news again and I am staying another one in Henderson with Elder Kalb! I'm honestly pretty glad. At the beginning of this week, I was kind of feeling like I failed in holding up this area, but I get another 6 weeks to see what we can do. So that'll be fun. But at the same time it'll be crazy to think that I will have lived in Henderson, Kentucky for 6 months of my life by the time this next one is over.
Also! Shoutout to Sister Matthews and Sister Henderson starting the MTC today! Looking back, the MTC was probably one of the more fun parts of my mission (albeit one of the most difficult). So I hope that y'all will both love it!
But anyways, this week was unique. Tuesday through Thursday were such a drag it wasn't even funny. Like we literally knocked doors all day. So fun. But the last half of the week was pretty good. We FINALLY found a new person to teach last night, so that was awesome. She like totally said she would come to Church next week (if we get her a ride)... allegedly. I guess we'll just have to have faith.
We also had a pretty awesome tender mercy/miracle this week with an inactive member. Saturday night, we had some things fall through and we didn't have anything else planned. After going on a walk for 45 minutes (see below) trying to find some people to teach, we headed back to the car and offered a prayer to know where we should go. Elder Kalb immediately thought we should go to Sister Hayden's family. My initial thought was that is exactly where we needed to go. Anyways, we get there and talk for about 20 minutes and then share a spiritual thought with her about having "protection scriptures" (See Elder Rasband's Liahona Article September 2022). After hearing the word protection, Sister Hayden kind of opened up to us about a pretty traumatic experience she had a few weeks ago. She kept on feeling like she needed to call or text us, but for whatever reason she didn't. We felt the Spirit so strong, knowing that it was where we needed to be tonight. We told her how we were led there, and she knew it wasn't a coincidence :) That is really what makes missionary work worth it.
One last thought before some fun stuff. I've been thinking a lot about the difference between sacrifice and consecration. I think one of the reasons why missionary work is so hard sometimes is because we're sacrificing SO much (friends, family, school, entertainment, etc. (insert a few more etc.)). While with consecration we get to physically see the outcome of our actions (we consecrate our time, money, and talents to the Lord's service), sacrificing sometimes feels like we're just leaving something to be metaphorically consumed on an altar (our family, friends, entertainment, and schooling), with what appears to sometimes be no evident results from our sacrifice. What is awesome though is that both are laws we still covenant with God to follow, and both are important. It's important to sacrifice as well as consecrate our lives to the Savior. What I do strongly believe though is that we'll be blessed for both sacrificing and consecrating for the Lord's cause. Hopefully that made some sort of sense. If not we'll...sorry...it makes sense to me so...
Anyways, let's get to some fun stuff!
On our 45 minute walk (from above) trying to find people to teach, we walk past this group of people drinking. As we are walking down the street, one of the guys straight up gasps, and then walks over to the rest of the group and starts whispering. Attempting to be, you know, a descent human being, we say something along the lines of "how are y'all doing tonight!?" To which they respond in a nice way. Well they were drinking, so we just kept walking, and we hear them talk among themselves whispering and saying "You know I used to be baptized mormon...I didn't even know they come around anymore..." Ahahaha it was so funny and we just started cracking up as we walked away. So yeah.
Also people are putting up Halloween decorations here, and I saw on Facebook someone post a contest for who can find the tackiest house with decorations. I thought that was a little mean, but I guess people are people.
Talked to a different drunk guy. Felt the Spirit leave as soon as we walked in, so we probably should have left. He got kind of upset that we had to leave in an hour to go to another appointment (to which he said "Cancel it!" "I'm jealous, and I want y'all all for myself." "Next time y'all need to plan on the whole day" to which we respectfully said, ah ha yeah no. He also "roasted" one of us by calling us the NBA commisioner. It was kind of funny, but also he was pretty passive aggressive, somewhat nice, and rude all at the same time. It was interesting. He said he doesn't believe the Book of Mormon but is (quote) <<intruiged>> (close quote). So yeah, fun times.
Ok this is way too long. Love y'all so much!!! Talk to you next week!!
